Paragliding is a kind of extreme sport, which seems similar to free-fall parachuting at first glance, in which paraglider pilots take off running from a high hill, instead of jumping out of an airplane with a parachute. The parachute, which is laid open on a sloping and high hill, is filled with air as the pilot starts to run and takes off with the pilot. The duration of the flights may last for kilometers / hours, depending on the performance of the material used and the experience of the pilot. It can be double para-glider (tandem) as well as solo para-glider.
Paragliding, the first attempt of which dates back to 1940s, has undergone a lot of changes and structural improvements that increase flight safety and duration until today. The first para-glider was similar to free-fall parachute. Over time it has changed into an aerofoil structure with high lifting power instead of pressure resistance. The paraglider wing structure has reached the optimal shape for easy take off, a good gliding performance and a slow descent rate since the 1980s. Paragliding sport in our country was known by the exploration of Babadağ by foreign pilots in the beginning of 1990, first started actively in university clubs. Being the most economical air vehicle ever known and being in touch with nature sports, has enabled it to be fondly done by a large mass today. Basically, the paragliding sport, which does not require any special skills or excessive effort, is easy and enjoyable to do after a standard training.
The majestic Babadağ, which covers the eastern side of Ölüdeniz, is one of the best flight points in the world for paragliding. Being on “world heritage" list with its rich flora, Babadag displays the magnificent beauty of Ölüdeniz and its surroundings from a different dimension. Babadağ is a track preferred by experienced sportsmen who want to make a single jump. Also, to make a tandem jump in company with a pilot and to document the visual quality of Ölüdeniz with your camera while gliding in the blue sky is an experience that will give a novel touch to not only your holiday but also your whole life…
Skywalk Cable Car will transport you to the summit of Babadağ with an exciting journey. Final preparations will be completed before the jump. After checking the parachuting equipment, the pilot will give you technical information and tell you what you need to do. Your task is to run a few steps towards the wind and leave yourself in the sky. Once you open the parachute, you will pass through the clouds and reach the sea. Now relax and enjoy this perfect flight…
Adrenaline and freedom in the sky… All you have to do is to say to yourself “I want this”. One of the most important factors that determine your descending duration is the thermics that change in the sky. On the route of your flight that takes about 25 minutes there is an outlook from the Butterfly Valley to Kayaköy and there are impressive beauties that nature has offered to the region. And your hands are free to document these beauties with your camera…
Your flight will end with a landing on the soft sands of Belcekız Beach. The enthusiasm of rising adrenaline and freedom will not leave you in the rest of your holiday.
Paragliding Runways in Babadağ
There are totally four runways. The south runway that is 1200 and 1700 meters is very convenient for takeoff. The 1800-meter north runway is a little small and steep. The takeoff area of the 1900 meter north runway is quite comfortable. 1,700-meter runway is generally used to take off because this runway receives the southern wind from exactly opposite side for most of the day. About 20 wings can be laid on this fairly large runway at the same time.
Belcekız Beach on the coast of Oludeniz is a long, broad, quite comfortable and safe landing area.
